Understanding IP Protection Ratings
Ingress Protection (IP) ratings indicate how well a lighting fixture resists dust and water penetration. For outdoor and wet environment installations, selecting the correct IP rating is essential for safety and longevity.

Decoding IP Ratings
IP ratings consist of two digits:
First Digit (0-6): Solid particle protection (dust)
Second Digit (0-9): Liquid ingress protection (water)
#
Common Outdoor Ratings
##
IP44
Protected against objects larger than 1mm
Protected against water splashes from all directions
Use for: Covered outdoor areas, porches, indoor wet areas
##
IP54
Dust protected (limited ingress)
Protected against water splashes
Use for: Semi-exposed installations, covered walkways
##
IP65
Dust tight (no ingress)
Protected against water jets from any direction
Use for: Exposed facades, garden lighting, parking lots
##
IP66
Dust tight
Protected against powerful water jets
Use for: Coastal areas, car washes, high-pressure cleaning zones
##
IP67

Selection Guidelines
When specifying outdoor fixtures:
Consider the worst-case exposure scenario
Account for cleaning methods used on-site
Factor in climate conditions (humidity, salt air)
Check local electrical codes for minimum requirements
Verify manufacturer’s warranty covers intended application
